At Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, we take the term “Social Responsibility” seriously. We believe that in order to be a responsible business, we must give back to not only the farming communities who supply us with our wonderful coffee, but to the community that has generously supported us since we opened.
Since 2002, we have been active supporters of community events and causes like the Bird Rock Home Tour and Taste of Bird Rock. In addition to contributions to Bird Rock Elementary, La Jolla High School, Mission Bay High School, La Jolla Historical Society, San Diego Lifeguard Foundation and the Menehune Surf Contest, we have stood behind numerous other community-driven fundraisers.
We also continue to support and develop programs that benefit the larger coffee-growing community. At this time, we are offering two “cause coffees” that we are using to generate funds for two worthy projects:
Uganda: We are donating $1 per pound sold of our organic Uganda Bugisu at the coffee bar to Change the Truth organization, an orphanage in Uganda that is working to provide children with the opportunity to further their education. Available now online.
Peru, India, South Africa: Beyond the Surface is a non-profit working to eradicate youth homelessness in coastal communities and to empower street children through surfing. The Kovalam Surf Club in India, WAVES in Peru, and Umthombo Surf Club in South Africa all operate under Beyond the Surface in an effort to give street children a chance to escape homelessness. Our Beyond the Surface Blend of organic coffees from small farms in Colombia is available now online.
We are asking local artists to re-interpret our company logo (original design by Paul Sjoberg). We will then make a limited run of T-shirts featuring that art with all proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt going directly to ArtReach. So far, we have raised over $500 with our first two designs (design #2 sold out too quickly to put online.) To contribute to ArtReach directly, click here.
The first T-shirts went on sale during the Taste of Bird Rock on 2009 and version three NOW available online. We only have 40 shirts and we will sell them until we sell out, so act soon if you want to pick up a new cool t-shirt and support ArtReach.
